I came up in the NYC punk scene of the early 80s and trained at Fanshawe Fine Art. I’ve been a musician as long as I’ve been a painter, and the two feed each other. When I paint I’m chasing the same thing I chase in a jam - a state where thinking stops and instinct takes over.
The finished paintings are bright, saturated, and loose. Light sits high in most of them. Composition and colour harmony are what I lean on to hold a piece together, whether the subject is a landscape, abstract, still life or portrait.
Underneath the surface there’s usually more going on - hand painted collage and printed text I’ve composed. Some of it stays visible, some gets buried. The layers give the work depth, not noise.
