I have been working with textiles and fibre arts for the majority of my life. I come by my love of fibre honestly - both my mother and my maternal grandmother are prolific fibre artists.
Since moving to Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, 10 years ago, my work has primarily been inspired by the lands and waters we are surrounded by. When I'm not weaving or carving lino prints, you can find me spending time with my family, gardening, and exploring other artistic mediums.
Currently, my practice is centered around tapestry weaving. I am inspired by my surroundings at home on Haida Gwaii and often work from specific images taken here as reference. Sometimes, I work from my imagination, allowing the tapestry to evolve as it is woven. I do not usually map out my image, but rather let the fibres build upon one another. Sometimes, where I thought there would be a wave, calm waters are required. Clouds can form where there was blue sky in the reference image. Working organically like this allows me to move through my process in the same way that coastal weather often directs how our days go here. What may seem like a bluebird day and end up offering a torrential downpour, or vice versa. Here on the coast, if you don't like what the weather is doing, we say "wait 15 minutes". I hold this akin to life. We have ebbs and flows. If your current moment in life is hard, trust that it too will change.
