  • Biography

"I love the freedom that comes from being in the moment with a painting. The complete emersion of focus that transcends all space and time and magnifies one’s experience to a single point of mastery and flow.
It feels like a dance of light and shadow that will gradually elucidate the character of a creature that I have previously met and photographed.
My paintings are impressionistically rendered portraits of animals surrounded by abstract colour field backgrounds.
The combination of the real and the unreal has layers of meaning for me. In one sense it represents my own personal experience of truth, the reality, and the experience of the reality.
On another level the literal collapse of the landscape and the ecosystems that support both human and animal life.
In a further truth the characters take on a mythical dimension acting as guides or protectors, and the colour field represents a threshold to the unknown.
Finally, I scale for human communication. Each animal is scaled up or down to encourage relatability. The concluding story is of the character themselves and my desire to extract each fellow from their surroundings so that the viewer has a chance to interact with the animal on an individual level."
