Joanna Mozdzen

Joanna Mozdzen is a Polish-Canadian sculptor whose ceramic work explores the emotional depth, silence, and spiritual beauty of the human face. Known for her serene, contemplative sculptures, Joanna creates expressive busts and figurative pieces that reflect a timeless inner stillness. Her forms often feature closed eyes and richly textured surfaces, inviting viewers into a space of reflection and emotional resonance. Originally trained as a midwife in Poland, Joann fascination with the human body and spirit eventually led her to sculpture. After immigrating to Canada, she began her formal art education in the H.B. Beal Special Art Foundation Program in London, Ontario a turning point that awakened her artistic path. She continued to develop her skills through evening sculpting classes at Fanshawe College and workshops at Fleming College, gradually transitioning into a full-time art practice. Since 2007, she has created numerous original ceramic sculptures. Joanna works primarily in clay, approaching it as both a meditative and therapeutic medium. Her process is intuitive: each piece begins with a simple lump of clay and emerges slowly through touch, vision, and emotion. Influenced by meditation, yoga, mythology, and symbolic archetypes, her art reflects a deep connection between form, presence, and healing. To enhance surface detail and emotional tone, she finishes her sculptures using a variety of techniques including encaustic wax, glazes, natural pigments, and acrylics. For Joanna, sculpture is not just visual expression, but a way to slow down, to listen inward, and to reconnect with what is essential. Her work invites others to do the same.
